This past weekend the beach (Daytona Beach Shores) was dotted with cannonball
jellyfish. We have often seen moon jellies and have even seen our fair share of the Portuguese Man o' War variety. But this was the first time we had seen the cannonball jellyfish on the beach.
Cannonball jellyfish are usually not dangerous to humans. However, it is always best to not pick up jellyfish. This variety feeds off zooplankton and red drum larvae. They are also a food source for the leatherback sea turtle.
That's the neat thing about the beach. You never know what you are going to find. And if your kids are there you can turn it into a science lesson.
