Riverbreeze Park in Oak Hill
Today we decided to spend some time at Riverbreeze Park, located at 250 H.H. Burch Road in Oak Hill. I wanted to check out a park I hadn't yet been to and when I searched around I thought this one sounded like just what I had in mind. Turned out, I was right!
Riverbreeze Park is a beautiful 37-acre park within Volusia County. Park entrance is free. When searching online, the information I found said that there was a 2-mile nature trail. That's the perfect length that I look for with my young kids. When we arrived it turned out that the trail was much shorter. I would say that all together it was around a half a mile of a nature trail. Although I would have liked a longer trail I was not disappointed with our walk and the time spent at this park. In fact, I was quite impressed!
There is trail that is paved and then there is a trail that leads back into the wooded area and is a rustic trail. The shorter paved area, as well as the boardwalk dock area, will be great for strollers and wheelchairs. Strollers may be able to go back into the wooded area as well, depending on how soft the ground is at the time. There is also a small camping area that says it is for special interest groups only.
On our walk we saw many great things! There were butterflies, wildflowers, woodpeckers, a variety of birds, a snake, and more. There are also shell midden areas throughout the park, where you will see big patches of shells. Once done with that we walked on the boardwalk dock that goes out over the river. Great boardwalk! We loved it there. We could look into the water and see crabs and fish. We saw egrets and anhingas. Then the real show started... we saw so many dolphin and manatees in the river. They were spotted in many different directions. Both coming out of the water here and there. It was awesome!
After that we made our way to one of the many covered picnic table areas for the lunch I had brought along. After eating, the kids played on the covered playground, we took one more quick walk down to the river to see the dolphin and manatee again, and then made our way home. This is a great park and well worth visiting! Pack a lunch, take the walk, notice all the beautiful things nature has to provide, let the kids play, and just relax. Oh, and the breeze coming off the river was absolutely wonderful!
