10 of the Best Sunscreens for Kids

Sunscreen
With summer upon us kids will be spending a lot of time outdoors at the beach. While the waves may help keep them cool on a hot day, it doesn't do anything to help protect their skin from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that your skin can be damaged by the sun within only 15 minutes of being out in it. They also report that you should be putting on sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF before you even go outside. It's also important to re-apply every two hours (or according to the package directions), especially if you will be swimming.

Protecting kids from the sun's harmful rays this summer should be a priority for every parent. However, not all sunscreen is created equal. Some may even contain ingredients that are considered potentially unsafe. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a consumer watch-dog company, tested 650 sunscreens and came up with what they feel is a list of the best ones on the market for kids. Here are 10 of the best sunscreens for kids and babies that made their list:

The sunscreens they tested were all marketed as being for children or babies. They also eliminated any sunscreens that had ingredients they felt were of concern, such as those having formaldehyde-releasing chemicals. The EWG also offers a search tool, where you can type in a name of a sunscreen or other cosmetics and get a safety rating for it (the lower the rating score the better.

Before hitting the waves in the Daytona Beach area, be sure to have your sunscreen ready to go. Keeping the kids and yourself lathered up will go a long way toward helping to protect your skin now and into the future. Volusia County is known for beautiful beaches and you can enjoy them more when you take along some of the best sunscreen!
