Manatees To Be Featured In MDC’s July Public Lecture

Manatees will be the featured topic at the Marine Discovery Center’s July monthly lecture. These gentle giants are among Florida’s most beloved mammals.

Bill Greer, a marine mammal biologist for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), will be the guest speaker. Greer will discuss the latest updates and concerns about manatees across the state.

The lecture will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019 starting at 6 p.m., and will be hosted by the Marine Discovery Center, located at 520 Barracuda Boulevard in New Smyrna Beach.

Greer has worked in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Northeast Fisheries Observer Program in data collection and protected-species training, and has served as a research associate with FWC for nearly four years. He currently oversees the Melbourne Beach Marine Mammal Lab, which covers Indian River, Brevard, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, Lake and part of Volusia County.

In his position at FWC, Greer works to rescue injured and sick manatees, as well as to recover and necropsy the deceased animals.

The July lecture is open to the public at no charge and no reservations are required.

Seating in the center’s Learning Lab is limited and early arrival is recommended.

For more information about the lecture, contact the Marine Discovery Center at 386-428-4828.
