Healthy Habits To Live By During Times of Uncertainty
What a time to be alive right now! As our country faces challenges due to the current pandemic and our communities are either facing curfews or at minimum self-distancing, we are at a time right now where there are many questions and people that are facing several challenges.
During times such as these, it is important to give our attention to matters in which we can control. Matters such as our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. As a husband, father, and small business owner, I cannot begin to stress this enough! Realistically, what can we do to maintain some semblance of normalcy? Here are some healthy habits I’ve implemented into my life during past times of uncertainty...
Establishing a Morning Routine
I’ve always believed in the saying, “how you begin your day is how you will end your day.” Establishing a morning with healthier habits such as exercising, drinking plenty of water, journaling, praying, meditating, and eating a balanced breakfast can do wonders for our self-esteem and energy throughout the day.
Time Management
When we are outside of our normal routines, it can be easy to become distracted by everything around us. In times of uncertainty, our calendars can become our greatest accountability partners. If we typically work a set amount of hours within the day, be sure to block that time out on your calendars (physical & mobile). Silence the phones, keep the televisions turned off and make a few phone calls throughout the day to coworkers so it helps keep focus on accomplishing important tasks.
Maintaining Eating Routines
For those of us that are working from home for the foreseeable future, it can become incredibly easy to become restless while being cooped up at home all day. This is where snacking out of boredom occurs. Whatever your traditional eating routine is, be sure to stick to it as closely as possible, only eating in times of real hunger and/or around your normal breakfast/lunch/dinner windows to avoid an excess of calories.
Taking Time to Relax
As we stay up to date on current events, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with what we see. Whenever we become overly stressed, our body naturally releases a stress hormone known as cortisol. Release too much of this over time and our bodies face potential physiological pushbacks. Hence why it becomes so essential to go outside, take time for ourselves, and do something that rejuvenates us.
During times of uncertainty, it can become increasingly easy to lose focus on what is truly important. But, with some self-discipline and extra accountability, we can remain focused on what we can truly control while maintaining some sense of normalcy.
