Activities to help support your child's fine motor development

Volusia

Fine motor skills help children perform important tasks such as feeding themselves, grasping and picking up objects, and using something to write with.

Developing fine motor skills in a child’s early years helps them accomplish self-care, such as buttoning or zipping up their clothing, tying their shoes, and brushing their teeth. Performing these fine motor tasks helps build their self-esteem and confidence.

Activities to help support your child’s fine motor development:

Infants: Add a small amount of water and a couple of Pom Poms in a zip-lock bag, and encourage your infant to move the Pom Poms around inside.

Toddlers: Using colorful Pom-Poms, have your child sort them by color into cups.

Preschool: With a clothespin, have your child pick up a cotton ball and dip it in paint and then use the paint on the cotton ball to paint on paper.
