Convenient Prenatal Care for Moms on Medicaid

Learning that you are expecting can bring many emotions— every woman may feel a range of feelings from excited to anxious to joyful and even a bit scared. Many women even find it overwhelming finding time to schedule appointments with their OB/GYN during pregnancy.

AdventHealth Medical Group OB/GYN at Daytona Beach is now offering even more care options for mothers-to-be with their brand-new virtual OB program. The best part? Patients have no additional costs for choosing virtual OB care. This new virtual OB program gives women the choice to have some of their prenatal visits from the comfort of their own home. After an initial consultation with Dr. Cecille Tapia-Santiago, a board-certified OB/GYN with over 24 years of experience, women who are considered a good candidate for virtual care can start scheduling virtual appointments.

Expecting mothers who qualify for this program will take home a blood pressure cuff, digital scale and even a fetal doppler so they can hear their baby’s heartbeat at home! During each virtual visit, a physician will review important information, key milestones and all women will still receive the same expert care they would receive when coming in for an appointment. Virtual OB services are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicaid.

Want to see if virtual OB care is right for you? Take the first step and schedule a consultation at AdventHealth Medical Group OB/GYN at Daytona Beach or call us at 386-231-3580.

Chiropractors seek out the root cause of illness

By Bethany Aponte, D.C., Clinic Professor, Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida

Chiropractors are often associated with addressing neck pain, back pain, and headaches by use of chiropractic adjustments and physical-therapy modalities. Initially, it may seem as though they’re only working to treat these issues, but they’re also digging deeper to find the root cause of the patient’s condition to help them reach their goals and optimize health and wellness.

One way a chiropractor does this is by looking at important lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, activity levels, and stress. Decreasing a patient’s pain is merely the tip of the iceberg; chiropractors also teach patients proper ways to move throughout the day to improve function.

Once a patient’s pain has decreased and function has been restored, more emphasis is placed on lifestyle factors that can be modified to decrease inflammation in the body and prevent chronic pain and disease.

Why is this so important? Six in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic disease, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer. These and other chronic diseases are the leading causes of disability and death in America. Underlying medical conditions at any age also put a person at an increased risk for more severe illness when exposed to infections. Thus, prevention efforts are important to reduce the prevalence of underlying medical conditions and their risk factors.

This typically starts with nutrition. Hippocrates once stated, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Because chiropractors take a drugs-free approach to pain, they educate patients on foods that may be contributing to a person’s aches and pains and leading them to potentially develop a host of chronic pain syndromes.

Next, if the patient has a nutrient deficiency, a chiropractor may recommend temporarily taking supplements to enhance and improve function throughout different systems in the patient’s body. Sleep, activity levels, and stress will also be discussed. If necessary, a patient may also be sent for bloodwork. Bloodwork will be assessed and analyzed with the goal of reaching optimal levels and the patient feeling their best.

The end goal is to teach patients how to eat and move well throughout the day, thereby preventing chronic pain and disease and living life optimally. Engaging in a healthier lifestyle not only allows patients the opportunity to experience a life based on wellness, but also it helps them to be better equipped to manage unforeseen health events should they arise.
